Basketball did not invent 67, but it is where the number learned to fly.
The height
It starts with the roster sheet. LaMelo Ball, 6'7". Also 6'7": a long list of wings and guards across the league, which means broadcasters say "six-seven" dozens of times a night. Every one of those is a cue. Editors have made a sport of catching them.
The score
When a team's total hits 67, arenas react. It began in college gyms, where student sections are built for this kind of thing, and spread to NBA crowds during the 2025-26 season. Some in-arena hosts lean into it and flash the number on the jumbotron. Others have quietly asked the scoreboard operator not to linger on it. Neither approach changes anything.
The players
Several players have done the gesture on camera: after a made three, during introductions, on the bench. It reads as a wink to the youngest fans, the ones who were doing it in the stands before the players caught on. A few rookies have admitted that their younger siblings taught them.
The broadcasters
This is where it gets fun. Commentators who say "six-seven" naturally now hear their own clip go viral within the hour. Some have started pausing, deliberately, before saying a height, which the internet enjoys even more. One veteran announcer reportedly switched to saying "six foot seven" as a defence. It did not work.
Why basketball and not football
