Most people play 67 Stack for a while before they ever really think about the piece that falls off. You drop a block slightly off, a chunk tumbles away, you shrug and move on. But that falling sliver is not just a visual flourish. It is the direct, physical record of every timing mistake you make, and understanding exactly how the game calculates it will change how you play.
Overlap is the only thing that matters
When your sliding block lands, the game does not care about the block's original size or shape. It only cares about one number: how much of the new block's width physically overlaps with the block sitting underneath it. Whatever portion overlaps becomes your new block. Whatever portion does not overlap is cut away entirely and turned into a separate falling piece with its own gravity, tumbling off toward the bottom of the screen.
This means a block that is mostly hanging off to one side does not get punished proportionally in some soft way. It gets cut with surgical precision, right at the boundary of the block below. There is no partial forgiveness beyond that exact overlap.
The tiny gap that ends everything
There is a hard floor to how much overlap is allowed before the game calls it a total miss. If the overlapping region is small enough, essentially nothing meaningfully touching, the entire block is treated as having nowhere to land. Instead of trimming it, the game sends the whole block falling as debris and the tower topples immediately. This is why a drop that looks like it clips the very corner of the block below can still end your run outright, rather than leaving you with a razor thin sliver to keep building on.
Every trim compounds
Here is the part that catches people off guard. Overhang is not corrected on the next drop. If block six gets trimmed down to seventy percent of its original width, block seven is now sliding in at that same, smaller width. There is no reset. Each trim is permanent and stacks on top of every trim before it, which means a tower built from a series of "close enough" drops slowly narrows into an increasingly thin, increasingly fragile column, even if none of the individual misses looked disastrous on their own.
Perfect drops are the only way to widen back out
The flip side of the overhang math is genuinely good news. Land a drop perfectly and the block is not just kept at its current width, it actually grows slightly, up to the game's built in maximum width. This is the only mechanism in the entire game that gives your tower width back after it has shrunk. So if you have taken a rough patch of sloppy drops and your tower has narrowed uncomfortably, the way out is not to panic and rush, it is to slow down and land a string of genuinely perfect drops until the width creeps back up.
Why watching the fallen pieces helps
The chunks that fall away are not just there for effect, they are a visible history of your run's accuracy. A tower surrounded by a scattering of large, chunky fallen pieces near the bottom tells you exactly where your early sloppy drops happened. A tower with only small slivers falling means your timing has been consistently tight. Glancing at that debris trail mid run is actually a useful, free diagnostic for how careful you need to be on the next drop.
