67 in Italy: Sei Sette Takes Over Schools

Ask an Italian teenager what 67 means and you will get the same answer as anywhere else: nothing, followed by the hands. But Italy added something.

Sei sette

In Italian, six is sei and seven is sette. "Sei sette" happens to sound like "you are seven", or, said quickly, like a question: "are you seven?". That accidental meaning gave the meme an extra layer that English never had. Kids started using it as a mock-insult ("sei sette" = you are a seven out of ten, at best) and as a nonsense answer to any question.

The gesture, Italian edition

Italy already had the world's most developed hand-gesture culture, so the 67 hands slotted in as if they had always existed. There is even a debate about whether the Italian version uses more wrist. It does.

Schools

Italian secondary schools reported the same pattern as everywhere: page 67, 6:07, any grade with a 6 or a 7. Since Italian grades run from 1 to 10, a 6 is a pass and a 7 is decent, which means "sei sette" describes roughly half of all marks. Teachers gave up quickly and, in several reported cases, joined in.

Basketball and football

Italy's basketball fans imported the American version whole: scoreboards at 67 trigger the crowd. Football does not reach 67 on the scoreboard, so fans transferred it to the clock: the 67th minute became a thing, with whole curves doing the hands at the stadium screen.

The leaderboard

Italy sits consistently high on the country leaderboard of 67 Tap relative to its population. We have a theory: the phrase is fun to say, the gesture is native, and Italians will compete in anything that has a ranking.

A group of friends at a bar. Someone asks the time. Someone else looks at their phone: "sei e sette". The whole table, hands up, no words. The waiter joins. That is the meme, fully assimilated.
