67 in the Philippines: Why It Is Huge There
The Philippines is one of the loudest 67 countries on Earth. Basketball, English-language TikTok and a talent for group jokes explain why.

On the 67 Tap leaderboard the Philippines sits near the top on most days, above countries with five times the population. It is not an accident.
Basketball is the national sport
The meme came out of NBA edits, and there is no country outside the United States that watches more basketball per person than the Philippines. LaMelo Ball highlights were already everywhere; the sound rode in on them. Every barangay court has a scoreboard, and every scoreboard passes through 67.
English-language TikTok
Filipino TikTok is largely in English or Taglish, which means American memes arrive without translation. "Six seven" was adopted as-is, in the original accent, with the original gesture. There was never a "anim pito" phase.
Group culture
The Philippines does group jokes better than almost anyone: dance crazes, chants, synchronised anything. A meme that is a two-beat gesture performed by a crowd was always going to thrive there. Videos of entire classrooms, jeepneys and church youth groups doing the hands in unison came out of the Philippines before anywhere else.
Schools
Filipino teachers reported the same page-67 problem as everyone else, with an added twist: many classes are taught in English, so "six" and "seven" appear in every subject. Some schools embraced it and used it as a classroom attention signal: teacher says "six", class answers "seven", everyone sits down. Genuinely clever.
The leaderboard
The Philippines was the first country to organise for the counter: student groups and streamers coordinating tap sessions to hold a rank. When it briefly fell behind Brazil in an early week, the reaction on social media was as if a basketball final had been lost. It climbed back within a day.
