Is 67 Dead? What Happens to Memes That Go Mainstream
Every few months someone declares 67 over. Here is how memes actually die, why 67 keeps not dying, and how to tell when it finally does.

"67 is dead" has been posted roughly once a week since the summer of 2025. The number is still here. So what does it take?
How memes usually die
- Adults adopt it. A brand uses it in an ad, a politician says it, a morning show explains it. The kids move on within days.
- It gets a definition. Once a meme means one specific thing, it stops being a toy.
- The trigger disappears. A meme tied to a show ends with the show. A meme tied to a song ends when the song stops being played.
- A replacement arrives. Attention is finite. The new thing eats the old thing.
Why 67 has resisted
- Adults adopted it and it did not matter. The joke was always adults not getting it; adults trying to use it is the same joke from the other side.
- It has no definition to get. Dictionary.com tried and wrote "a vibe". You cannot pin down nothing.
- The trigger is the number system. 6 and 7 are not going anywhere. Every clock, price and page is a cue forever.
- The replacements failed. 41 was an attempt, and the internet treated it as one.
What "dead" actually looks like
A meme is dead when saying it makes younger kids cringe. Not adults, younger kids: the ones who inherit the culture. When a nine-year-old rolls their eyes at a thirteen-year-old doing the hands, 67 is finished. That has not happened yet. If anything, the nine-year-olds are the loudest.
The other ending
Some memes do not die; they retire into the language. "Lol" is not funny anymore and is typed a billion times a day. "OK" was a joke in 1839. 67 could go this way: a number that means "so-so" or "whatever", said without a laugh, forever. That would be a stranger fate than death, and probably the one it deserves.
Our position
We built a game about it, so we are not neutral. But we built the game to outlast the meme: the runner is a good runner and the counter is a good counter whether or not anyone is shouting the number. If 67 dies, we will still be here. We will just be quieter.
