Why Schools Are Banning 67 (and Why It Never Works)

By autumn 2025 the complaint was universal. Ask any teacher of ten to fourteen year olds what the hardest part of the year was and a surprising number would say: a number.

What the ban looks like

It starts small. A teacher says "open your books to page 67" and the class erupts. The teacher learns to say "page sixty-seven" very carefully, or skips the page. Then the maths lesson has a 6 and a 7 in the same problem. Then the clock hits 6:07. Then a kid does the hands silently during a test and the whole row loses it.

So schools react. Some banned the phrase, some banned the gesture, some banned both. A few sent letters home. One district reportedly made it a detention offence. Whole-school assemblies were held to explain why a number was now forbidden.

Why it never works

• You cannot ban a number. It is on every clock, page and worksheet. The trigger is everywhere.
• The ban is the joke. The meme has no meaning; the reaction of adults is the content. A ban is the most extreme reaction possible, so it is the funniest thing that can happen to it.
• The silent version exists. Palms up, small wobble, no sound. Undetectable from the front of the room, devastating from the back.
• It spread further. Every news story about a ban introduced the meme to a thousand kids who had not heard of it.

What actually worked

Teachers who reported success mostly did the opposite of banning:

1. Do it once, badly. A teacher doing the gesture with the wrong timing kills the room instantly. Nothing is less funny than an adult trying.
2. Give it a slot. "You get one six seven per class. Use it wisely." Kids ration it and, weirdly, comply.
3. Ignore it completely. Hard to do, effective within a week.
